The Power of Grounding

With the crazy pace of our lives atm, staying grounded is vital  for maintaining a sense of stability and connection. Grounding might seem like a buzzword, but it does actually help to stay consciously connected to the present moment and our physical bodies. It really does provide a solid foundation within our day to day lives. This practice not only calms the nervous system but also enhances our overall well-being. Let’s jump in and explore the concept of grounding, the various ways you can apply grounding to your everyday life,  and uncover the benefits of this powerful practice.

Let’s Talk about Grounding

Did you know grounding is also known as earthing? It refers to the practice of connecting with the Earth’s energy. This connection helps stabilise our body’s electrical system and brings balance to our physical, mental, emotional and energetic states. This can be achieved through direct physical contact with the Earth or through practices that focus on bringing awareness to the present moment.

Let’s face it, we can be easily distracted and often disconnected from the natural world, spending most of our time indoors and surrounded by technology. Unfortunately this can be felt as feelings of instability, anxiety, and stress. Grounding helps us reconnect with the Earth, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.

For 25 years, I avoided my own body’s need for being outside and being connected to nature. I just thought I needed to be on the go 24/7 which consistently led to moments of anxiousness and triggers for my depression.  I now know (isn’t hindsight amazing), how good I feel – ALL OVER when I am in nature, outside, connecting to elements, like water.

Here are 6 Benefits to consider

Grounding offers many  benefits for our overall health and well-being:

  1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Grounding helps calm our  nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety levels. By connecting with the Earth’s energy, we can find a sense of peace and stability.
  2. Improves Sleep: Regular grounding practices can improve sleep quality by regulating circadian rhythms and reducing nighttime cortisol levels.
  3. Good time vibes: Grounding has been shown to elevate mood and increase feelings of happiness and contentment.
  4. Boosts Immunity: Grounding can support the immune system by reducing inflammation and promoting overall physical health.
  5. Increases Energy Levels: Connecting with the Earth’s energy can help you support yourself when  fatigued and increase vitality.
  6. Balances Emotions: Grounding helps bring emotional balance by helping to release negative emotions and allowing a sense of inner stability to occur.

Here are my 8 favourite ways to Ground myself

There are several ways you can introduce grounding into your daily practices. The key, don’t try and do everything. Incrementally build each practice into your day.

  • Walking Barefoot: One of the simplest and most effective ways to ground yourself is to walk barefoot on natural surfaces like grass, sand, or soil. Direct contact with the Earth allows you to absorb its energy, promoting a sense of calm and stability.

My favourite is walking on sand and being able to bury my feet as the waves wash over them. It’s about being intentional with what you are doing. Yes, you’ll get the benefits of walking, but you’ll boost those benefits when you feel, think, touch and breath

  • Spending Time in Nature: Immersing yourself in nature is a powerful way to ground yourself. Whether it’s hiking in the woods, sitting by a river, or simply enjoying a park. Spending time outdoors helps you reconnect with the natural world.

I connect with the water strongly. We have a river nearby – The Hawkesbury river where I will go and sit by it. Watching, observing, listening – not just to the water, but the wildlife as well. It might sound a bit strange – but I get lost in the rhytm of the water. It helps clear my mind.

  • Gardening: Gardening is not my jam but i do know the fun of digging in the soil, planting, and nurturing plants can be incredibly grounding and therapeutic.

I’m more of a black thumb, but have started replanting herbs and I regularly walk past so I can smell the gorgeousness of them.

  • Breathing Exercises: Deep, mindful breathing helps ground you by bringing your focus to the present moment. Try this simple exercise: Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat for several minutes, focusing on your breath.

When I catch myself shallow breathing, I stop and take a deep breath. I can feel it go all the way down into my belly – filling me up with goodness. Helping me relax my neck and shoulders.

  • Body Scan Meditation: This mindfulness practice involves paying attention to different parts of your body, starting from your toes and moving up to your head. By bringing awareness to each part of your body, you can release tension and feel more grounded.

This is a practice I am really focussing on including in the morning and night – sometimes i will do everyday, sometimes not. As I scan, I feel into my emotions, my mental capacity, my physical self and my energy. At night time, i’ll do a comparison to see how i felt earlier and later…note i said feel not think 😉

  • Grounding Visualisation: Visualisation is a powerful tool for grounding. Close your eyes and imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet, extending deep into the Earth. Visualize these roots anchoring you firmly, providing you with stability and strength.

I love doing this. It helps stabalise me. I feel literally grounded (ok, sometimes my visualisations see me turn into Poison Ivy from Batman 😁 )

  • Using Grounding Objects: Some objects, such as crystals, stones, or grounding mats, can help you feel more connected to the Earth. Hold a grounding stone like hematite or black tourmaline in your hand, or use a grounding mat while sitting or sleeping.

Ok, it’s true – in our house there are crystals everywhere – every room!! But my favourite grounding object, is my grounding mat…I love it. They are also known as Earthing Mats. I especially use this mat when I sleep, or when i am in the office or if I am giving Reiki to a client.

  • Mindful Movement: Practices like yoga, tai chi, and qigong involve mindful movement and breath, which help ground you by bringing awareness to your body and the present moment.

I have a few autoimmune issues that make it hard at times to do yoga or pilates – but I have done qigong. It is very gentle. Here is the link to the Youtube Qigong for Beginners that I use.

  • Incorporating Grounding into Daily Life

I love grounding, but it has taken me a few years to find what works for me. The first is To make grounding a part of your daily routine, start by incorporating simple practices that resonate with you. Begin your day with a grounding exercise, such as a short walk outside or a few minutes of deep breathing. Take breaks throughout the day to reconnect with the Earth, whether it’s stepping outside for fresh air or practicing a quick grounding visualization.

Incorporating grounding practices into your evening routine can also help you unwind and prepare for restful sleep. Spend a few minutes doing a body scan meditation or use grounding objects to calm your mind and body.

…and finally

Grounding is a powerful practice that helps us maintain stability and connection in our fast-paced lives. By incorporating grounding techniques into our daily routines, we can experience many benefits, including reduced stress, improved sleep, enhanced mood, and increased energy levels. Whether it’s walking barefoot, spending time in nature, or practicing mindful breathing, there are many ways to ground yourself and enjoy a greater sense of well-being.
